CLONAKILTY Post Office is set for a major upgrade after Cork County Council approved plans for a new mail sorting room.
The development will see a derelict store in the yard of the Bridge Street post office demolished and replaced with a state-of-the art mail sorting room.
The new facility will include an access loading ramp linking the proposed sorting room with the adjacent former phone exchange building, which is a protected structure.

The development, which also covers associated site works, was given the green light last month and no observations were submitted.
Conditions attached to planning permission relate to preserving the protected phone exchange and ensuring that any construction or alterations respect its character and setting.
Materials and finishes used in the project must be in keeping with those outlined in the submitted plans, and any future changes will need further approval, the council stated in their approval.
Meanwhile, a separate development has also been approved for Clonakilty Community Hospital.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) was granted planning permission last month to upgrade the hospital’s waste management facilities.
Plans include the demolition of an existing waste disposal area and the construction of a new enclosure designed for the secure storage of clinical waste bins and gas bottles.
A new bio-digester will also be installed as part of the works.
Located within the area of another protected structure, planning permission was granted subject to a number of environmental and operational conditions.
They require the new enclosures to be used only for waste handling associated with the hospital and not for any other purpose.
All waste storage and transfer will be confined to enclosed structures to safeguard residential and visual amenity.
Public consultation ended on February 16th with no observations submitted.
Cork County Council said the proposal aligns with the development plan for the area, adding that the upgrades will not adversely affect local amenities or the character of nearby buildings.
