SIR – In the midst of flooding, what madness – the proposal to build blocks of student apartments in what used to be the Coca Cola bottling plant in Carrigrohane Road Cork City, an area prone to flooding, one incidence closing a hotel across the road for six years, flooding the County Hall and the County Library depository where a large quantity of books was destroyed.

The application must be rejected point blank. Any future UCC-related developments, be it new campuses or student accommodation should be located on high ground, well away from the possibility of flooding. What was once Faranferris Junior Seminary on the north side of the river is an ideal building for a new campus and associated accommodation.

Mainstream political party representatives, taking instructions through the party whip system, will be reluctant to accept this idea. Willingly, they will be cajoled into accepting the status quo of concentrating construction and commercial developments in and around the river basin.

Public representatives and election candidates not aligned to a political party should be supported in pushing for the implementation of this proposal.

Joe Terry,

Lower Aghada.
