The N71 between Connonagh and Rosscarbery is closed this evening as Gardaí investigate an accident in which a teenage cyclist was killed.

A CYCLIST has suffered fatal injuries in a collision between his bike and a car at Barley Hill, Rosscarbery, on the main N71 Clonakilty to Skibbereen road in West Cork.

The accident happened around 7.10pm this (Tuesday) evening and the victim, an 18-year-old man believed to be from the area, died at the scene of multiple injuries despite the best efforts of paramedics to revive him. The driver of the car, a man in his late 60s, was uninjured, but was treated for shock.

The victim’s body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to take place on Wednesday morning. The road is closed to facilitate a forensic collision examination and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who was on that road between 6.30 and 7.10pm this evening to contact them at Clonakilty Garda station on 023-8821570, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
