PARTICIPANTS in a walk and talk across the site of the old Allmans Distillery will get to sample a tipple of its famous whiskey which follows the recipe from 100 years ago.

Niall Tubridy from Bandon is leading the event across the site of the old distillery at the back of Bandon Mart as part of Heritage Week.

The famous distillery ceased production in 1925 and would have employed between 70 and 120 people at its peak.

‘This year’s theme is ‘Heritage at Risk’ and I will be examining the distillery and its contribution to the agri-industrial archaeology of Bandon,’ he said.

At the end of the second tour he is planning to share the contents of a bottle of Allmans (style) whiskey in honour of the town’s distilling heritage and to mark its centenary since ceasing operation.

‘Historically Irish whiskey is very different to what it is now. A recipe was found from 1915 based on historic mashbills (grains) from around the country and one of them was Allmans, which I have tasted.

Niall said the whiskey is ‘absolutely delicious’ and it’s not like anything a whisky drinker would be familiar with.

Niall’s tours will take place on consecutive Saturdays on August 15th and 22nd from 10am to 1pm.
