Clonakilty's popular traffic warden John O'Carroll has announced that he is retiring from his post after almost 20 years in the role.

CLONAKILTY’S popular traffic warden John O’Carroll has announced that he is retiring from his post after almost 20 years in the role.

The Dublin native, who is well known throughout West Cork, told friends in a Facebook post this week that he is retiring on medical grounds.

‘I will truly miss my job as I have had such a wonderful time serving the fantastic people of Clonakilty,’ he wrote.

‘Since starting in Clonakilty on November 1st, 1999, I have met with the warmest and most welcoming community one could ever hope to meet. Along the way, both my beautiful wife Sheila and I have made lifelong friends in Clon,’ he said.

He thanked everyone for making his job ‘such a pleasurable experience’ and also to his work colleagues and, in particular Justin England of Cork County Council, for all the support he received.

John, who recently moved with his wife Sheila from Skibbereen to Clonakilty, said he now looks forward to meeting everyone on the street – in an unofficial capacity! – in order to catch up ‘on all the local gossip’!
