FUNDING has been announced for three popular swimming beaches in West Cork.

Garretstown, Garrylucas and Inchydoney beaches will each receive €10,000 for the upgrade of pathways and slipways, including the installation of railings.

The funding comes from the Healthy Ireland fund for outdoor swimming facilities.

This is the second year of the scheme which aims to make approved outdoor swimming locations more accessible, enabling more people to enjoy the health benefits of outdoor swimming.

South West Fine Gael Senator Noel O’Donovan welcomed the announcement and said: ‘This is really welcome for West Cork. These are some of the most popular swimming destinations for communities here, and for visitors to West Cork. This funding underpins their importance to us and seeks to improve them to encourage outdoor swimming here.’

He added: ‘These enhancements will make these approved locations more accessible, particularly for people with reduced mobility, and will build on the progress made since the scheme was introduced in 2024.’

Disbursement of the funding will be carried out by Sport Ireland on behalf of the Department of Health, in line with their vision of an active Ireland where everyone can enjoy the lifelong benefits of sport and physical activity.
