WORKS on the commencement  Macroom's new garda station begin this Friday when the first sod will be turned at the site by Minister for Justice Jim O’ Callaghan and Minister of State at the OPW, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran.

The multi-million-euro project is one of the most expensive projects ever delivered in the town, and will serve as new Regional Garda Divisional HQ for Cork county.

JJ Rhatigan & Co has been contracted to build the new station beside the new fire station at Gurteenroe.

Macroom’s current Garda Station which was built in 1850 has long been regarded as out of date for modern policing.

Cork North West Fianna Fáil TD Aindrias Moynihan said that ‘to get to this stage, there has been a great deal of background work with the various authorities, including the OPW, Cork County Council, An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice.’

He welcomed the additional services and personnel the new station will bring to the area, and added that ‘The patience of our Gardaí and the local community in Macroom over the years must also be acknowledged.’
