A man from Glengarriff is on a promise of a suspended sentence provided he pays €53.73 compensation to a Dunmanway store owner.

Shane O’Brien of The Perrin Inn, Glengarriff, was legally represented at Bantry District Court by Flor Murphy, solicitor.

In mitigation, the accused told Judge Joanne Carroll that he has been clean of heroin and cocaine for 18 months.

He said he was pleading guilty to stealing groceries valued at €53.73 from an Aldi Store at Main Street, Dunmanway, on September 13th 2025.

But the accused, who has 101 previous convictions, reminded Judge Carroll that he has not committed any offence since the day he handed in a letter giving her an undertaking to go straight.

Shane O’Brien said the incident on September 13th last pre-dated the letter and that he has been true to his word.

The accused also apologised for the theft.

Judge Carroll adjourned the case to the March 26th sitting of Bantry District Court and told Shane O’Brien: ‘I will impose a suspended sentence if the compensation is paid.’
