Schull student wins top prize with ‘growth' business idea

Schull Community College student Fionn Ferreira took the overall prize at the recent West Cork Student Enterprise finals which were held in Rosscarbery. 

SCHULL Community College student Fionn Ferreira took the overall prize at the recent West Cork Student Enterprise finals which were held in Rosscarbery. 

Fionn will now take his business ‘Miniplot’ to Cork’s County Hall on March 31st to compete against the North Cork winners for a place at the Student Enterprise National finals in Croke Park in May.

Fionn, who has been interested in gardening from a young age, decided to base his business on his passion, and set up Miniplot which sells beautifully presented flower and herb growing kits for the starter gardener and budding growers.

Fionn said: ‘I am delighted to represent West Cork and hopefully will also be chosen to represent the Cork North and West region at the national finals in May. Either way, I am going to continue on with the business and I have just set up online shopping so Miniplot kits can now be shipped worldwide.’ Other prize winners included ‘Easy Reader’ (second place) from Castletownbere Community School, ‘Draw me a Story’ (third place), Colaiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon, ‘ADL Cake Cutters’ (Best Innovation), Skibbereen Community School, ‘Vega’, (Best use of Social Media) Colaiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon, and ‘Log It’, (Best Display), Sacred Heart Clonakilty. Other awards on the day included Best Business Development, sponsored by The Canvas Works, which went to the ‘Wild Atlantic Colouring Book’ from Mount Saint Michael, Rosscarbery and a Social Responsibility Award sponsored by Skibbereen Credit Union which was awarded to ‘Helping Hands, Sacred Heart Clonakilty, while Fionn Ferriera also took the award for Business Person of the Future.
