Skibbereen’s Credit Union offices will host a ‘Rio’ party next Wednesday with a special screening of the O’Donovan brothers’ semi-final race in the Olympics.

SKIBBEREEN’s Credit Union offices will host a ‘Rio’ party next Wednesday with a special screening of the O’Donovan brothers’ semi-final race in the Olympics.

A long-time sponsor and supporter of both Gary and Paul O’Donovan, and the Skibbereen Rowing Club, the Credit Union will mark the occasion with large screens in the banking hall for people to watch the race, as well as creating a Brazilian carnival atmosphere in the build-up to the event.

This is the fourth time rowers from Skibbereen have represented Ireland at the Olympics.

Donal O’Driscoll of Skibbereen Credit Union said the staff were really looking forward to seeing the lads flying the flag for Skibbereen and Ireland on Sunday for their heat, and again next Wednesday for the semi-final.

‘To make it to the Olympics is such an enormous achievement in itself,’ he said, ‘so we are celebrating the fact they have made it, and will put work aside for six minutes to cheer them on from Skibbereen. We hope that everyone in the town will congregate in the Credit Union banking hall for the race just after 1pm, and show their support for the lads who have worked and trained so hard to get to Rio.

‘They are a credit to their club and to themselves and we are thrilled to be one of their main supporters since the beginning.’

People are invited to watch the men’s lightweight double sculls semi-final race, which will begin at 1.10pm and enjoy the festive atmosphere in Skibbereen Credit Union from 12.30pm.

If the boys finish in the top three on Wednesday, they will then qualify for the ‘A’ final which will be held on Friday, August 12th.
