An elusive mystery has captured the imagination of the people of West Cork for decades: what is West Cork’s favourite pancake topping?
The Southern Star have conducted a ground-breaking survey in the hopes to find the answer.
Gourmands from Castletownbere to Kinsale took to the polls and responded to our survey in the lead up to Pancake Tuesday.

The verdict is clear; lemon and sugar is the all-time favourite pancake topping in West Cork, taking 49% of the vote.
Nutella followed behind with 17%. Maple syrup got 13%.
Ice cream and bacon came in under a tie, each earning 3% of the overall vote.
Other entries include jam, ham and cheese, strawberries and Viennetta.
One respondent made sure to maximise their pancake’s protein potential, and answered that they topped their pancakes with whey protein powder, creatine and ‘a cheeky little banana.’
Another respondent kept it plain and simple, preferring no topping on their pancake.
The highly anticipated results of this study have shown that West Cork citizens like to stick to what they know best, but they aren’t afraid to try something new from time to time.
