THE timing of works on the R589 Macroom Road in Bandon was good and the quality of work that was carried out is to be commended, a meeting heard last week.
Senior executive engineer Richard Cahill was outlining to councillors at a meeting of Bandon Kinsale Municipal District the traffic calming measures on the road adjacent to Bandon Co-op, which will also include two new gateway signs signalling to motorists to slow down.
He said the works took six weeks to complete and thanked the contractor for the quality of the work and managing to keep delays to motorists to a minimum.

‘We will be installing two small raised crossings after we install street lighting and a number of native trees will also be planted,’ he said.
‘The funding for the project was difficult to get bit but I want to thank the NTA and especially Bandon Co-op for giving us the land to carry out the works and carrying out the landscaping too.’
He said he was recently on the road and saw a steady stream of people walking on the new footpaths.
‘The timing was good for the project. We had no funding when we planned this last year.’
Meanwhile, councillors were informed that works on upgrading Market Street as part of the multi-million Bandon TPREP (Bandon Transportation & Public Realm Enhancement) have now ceased for the Christmas period with contractors expected to return on site in January.
Executive engineer John Duggan said a road closure will be required at some point in the new year to install a pedestrian raised crossing at the Church Steps and he expects all the works to be completed by February 2026 and resurfacing works will be carried out as far as Chapel Lane.
Cllr Marie O’Sullivan (FG) said that South Main Street is looking great due to the works completed earlier this summer as well as the brand new Christmas lights decorating the street.
Cllr Ann Bambury (SD) paid tribute too to Bailiú na Banndan and the Bandon Business Association (BBA) for the recent switching on of the Christmas lights in the town.
She also requested signage to be installed on approach roads into the town indicating that pay parking is suspended in Bandon until January 4th.
