GARDAÍ in Macroom are appealing for witnesses following this afternoon’s fatal traffic collision on the N22.

At approximately 1:05pm, gardaí were called to the scene of a multi-car collision on the N22 at Carrigaphooca near Macroom. A man in his 60s driving one of the cars was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of a second car, a male in their 20s, was seriously injured in the collision was airlifted from to Cork University Hospital. They were both the sole occupants of the cars.

The occupants of a third car were uninjured. Garda forensic collision investigators are examining the crash site and local diversions are in place. The body of the deceased has been taken to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital for a post mortem examination.

The local coroner has been notified. Traffic is being diverted via Millstreet and the N72. Gardaí are advising motorists to take an alternative route between Cork and Killarney, due to the additional pressure of Friday evening traffic and, if possible, to use the N20 and N72 via Mallow.

Gardaí in Macroom are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 026-20590 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
