Cork-based Fine Gael Senator Tim Lombard has declared his belief that the role of Tánaiste should be given to his county colleague, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney TD.

Senator Lombard said today: ‘As Deputy Leader of the Fine Gael party, Minister Simon Coveney is the most logical and qualified candidate for the role of Tánaiste.

‘Throughout his career Minister Coveney has consistently proven himself to be an incredibly capable politician within a variety of complex briefs. In his current cabinet role as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade we have seen him calmly assess and negotiate Ireland’s best interests within the thorny and ever-changing circumstances surrounding Brexit,’ he added.

‘As one of the most senior cabinet members Minister Coveney has great experience and understanding necessary to fulfil the duties of Tánaiste. I do not believe there is anyone more deserving of the role.’
