THERE is an open invitation to the people of West Cork to attend mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Skibbereen and share in the Episcopal Ordination ceremony of Fr Fintan Gavin as the new Bishop of the Cork and Ross Diocese at 3pm on Sunday, June 30th.

The ceremony in Cork, which is by special invitation only, will be simultaneously relayed from Cork’s North Cathedral (St Mary and St Anne’s) and live-streamed to a large 16’ x 9’ television screen set-up to view the special event in the Skibbereen Cathedral.

Mass on the day will celebrate Dublin-born Fr Gavin becoming the first bishop to be appointed to the Cork and Ross Diocese in the new century. This position has only been held by Corkmen since 1787 (Ross Diocese had Tipperary-born Bishop Denis Kelly from 1897 to 1924).

During the ceremony, the Papal Mandate, which is the official letter from Pope Francis appointing Fr Fintan Gavin as Bishop of the diocese, will be read out.  The ceremony can also be viewed via live-stream onwww.corkandross.org and on www.corkcathedral.ie for those who cannot attend.

In addition, on Sunday, July 7th next, at St Patrick’s Cathedral Skibbereen, Bishop Gavin will be celebrating mass at both 9am and 11.30am.

Teas and coffees will be served at the Presbytery after each mass with an invitation to meet the new Bishop. All are welcome.
