Inspiring young people are honoured

The leading lights among West Cork’s youth were honoured at the the 24th West Cork Garda Youth Awards, in association with SuperValu

THE leading lights among West Cork’s youth were honoured at the the 24th West Cork Garda Youth Awards, in association with SuperValu.

Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan, Divisional Officer for Cork West Division, paid tribute to the winners, saying that it was heartening to see so many young people involving themselves in activities within their local communities.

Inspector Brian Murphy, Chairman of the Organising Committee lauded the achievements of the winners, and commented that not alone are they the leaders of the future, but that they the leaders of today.

A total of 16 awards were presented and they were: overall winners - Sarah Fitzgerald, Kinsale; Katie O’ Callaghan, Bandon; Sheena Sheehan, Macroom; Edel Hayes, Rosscarbery; Andrew O’ Connor, Goleen; Alicia O’Sullivan, Castlehaven.

District winners – Michelle O’ Donovan, Bandon; Siadbh Redmond, Ballydehob; Sophia Kate Leahy, Skibbereen and Fionn Crowley, Macroom. Group award: Foróige Macroom. Special Achievement award – Ciarán Hoey, Innishannon; Elton Sibanda, Millstreet. Community safety award: Virtually Connected, Socially Disconnected, Castletownbere,  Áine Spencer, Darragh O’ Sullivan, Rose Power, Naomi O’ Sullivan, Ben Sullivan.

Outstanding contribution to youth award: Nellie Cotter, Schull; Gearóid Ó h-Éalaithe, Cill na Martra
