ON February 13th last, Gardai from Bandon Garda Station played a pool tournament against young people in the Bandon Youth Project. This project is a Garda Youth Diversion Project that seeks to divert young people from anti-social behaviour and from criminal activity.

The project also helps young people develop their sense of community and their social skills through different activities. It also seeks to improve relations between the Gardaí and the young people in the community.Garda Damian White, Community Garda, organised the event, in conjunction with Valerie Wongkumad and Maria O’Sullivan, who run the project.

During the course of a very enjoyable afternoon, members of the project played matches against the Gardaí. Despite some close calls, the tournament was won by the younger generation, and Garda White presented the cup to Valerie and Maria, Youth Justice Workers, on behalf of the Youth Diversion Project.

Garda White also presented a Garda medal of achievement to all players on the Project’s team, and promised them a rematch in the not too distant future.

Other Gardai who participated were Gardai Sean O’ Connor, Theresa Lyons, Dylan Seymour, Conor Ryan and Shane Hayes, all Bandon.
