Elderly man dies after collision near Dunmanway

Gardaí in Clonakilty are appealing for witnesses following a single-vehicle fatal collision near the West Cork town of Dunmanway.

A man in his 70s died on Saturday morning after the vehicle he was driving collided with a ditch near Dunmanway. Gardaí in Clonakilty are appealing for witnesses following the single vehicle fatal collision.

Shortly before 11am, a 4x4 vehicle left the road and struck a ditch on the R585 at Shanlaragh near Dunmanway. The driver and sole occupant of the 4x4, a male septuagenarian, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. 

His body was removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital. An examination of the vehicle and crash site was carried out by Garda forensic collision investigators and the local coroner has been notified. Investigating Gardaí say the results of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of a Garda investigation into the incident.
