DRAINAGE and accessibility works under way at Darrara Cemetery, just outside Clonakilty, have been welcomed by local Fine Gael Councillor John Michael Foley.

Cllr Foley (FG) said that fighting to secure funding for this work was very important to him because families who purchase a grave at that cemetery should have peace of mind that without the worry of water in the grave.

‘As a family business funeral director, I also know the practical difficulties excess water can cause when graves are being prepared. This work will help remove one additional worry at an already incredible difficult time for families,’ said Cllr Foley.

He previously described the cemetery, which is only 30 years old and was built close to a water course, as a no-go zone for coffin trolleys.

‘Improving accessibility is equally important. Families should be able to visit the graves of their loved one with dignity and without unnecessary difficulty. A cemetery should be a safe, accessible and above all, a respectful place for everyone.’

Cllr Foley raised the issue at a meeting of Bandon Kinsale Municipal District last November.

Funding was secured in April to progress the works.

Cork County Council confirmed that drainage works at the cemetery commenced on August 10th.
