Clonakilty have given pride of place in their trophy cabinet to their most recent award.

CLONAKILTY have given pride of place in their trophy cabinet to their most recent award.

The town won the top prize in category five of the Pride of Place awards, which is for towns which populations over 5,000.

The awards, announced last week, acknowledge the achievements and the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development.

Judges said it was obvious to them that Clon was an ‘idyllic place to live, visit and work – made possible by the enthusiasm and commitment of the town’s numerous volunteers.’

They added: ‘This category winner is a vibrant and colourful town that has over the years earned awards.

‘The town has embraced sustainable tourism and offers an abundance of activities. On entering the town, the judges were particularly impressed with the beautiful streetscapes and the astonishing number of local organisations which cater for every possible need and interest.’

The Pride of Place competition was initiated 15 years ago through a Co-operation Ireland programme to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by communities and groups across the country.
