A JUDGE struck out a charge of careless driving against a man who was involved in a collision on a road on Bere Island that was not wide enough for two vehicles to pass. Sgt Trish O’Sullivan outlined the facts of the case at Bantry District Court saying the accused, Michael Murphy, a 71-year-old retired police officer with an address of Ballinakilla, Bere Island, collided with a vehicle in which there was a driver and three passengers. The sergeant said the incident occurred around 2pm at Ballinakilla on September 5th 2024, and that the occupants of the other car reported the incident once they reached the mainland.

Sgt O’Sullivan acknowledged that the accused has no previous convictions, but the contention was that the driver of the other car was able to stop in time, and Michael Murphy was not. The court was told that the other driver and his passengers were on Bere Island for a stag do, and that the accused’s insurance is likely to meet claims that are allegedly being taken in this case. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.
