AFTER an absence of four years, the late Sr Alphonsus’ ‘Come to the Manger’ is making a welcome return to St Patrick’s Church in Bandon much to the delight of parishioners.

The advent celebration featuring local people who bring to life the events leading up to the Nativity had been a popular staple for many years.

It was produced by the late Sr Alphonsus O’Brien for Bandon parish and was heralded as a must-see production. This marks the first year it will take place since her death in 2021.

Speaking to The Southern Star, Esther Sinnott, coordinator of the parish liturgical drama group, said that Theresa McCarthy will be directing the production and rehearsal are already under way.

‘Several of Sr Alphonsus’ former drama students will be taking part as well as people from the local community. Vaiva Naraveckaite, who is a former student of St Alphonsus and a graduate of Theatre & Drama Studies at the Cork School of Music will play the part of Mary,’ said Esther.

‘Caoimhe Lehane, who is currently studying in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, will take on the role of Angel Gabriel. She is also following in the footsteps of her grandmother Noreen Lehane, who was also a pupil of Sr Alphonsus.’

Carmel Cotter Bowdren, a former colleague of Sr Alphonsus at Presentation Primary School will take the role of narrator, while the part of Elizabeth will be played by Sarah O’Keeffe of Gaggin Drama Society.

The children from the local Naíonra will play the part of the angels and shepherds all expertly led by Myra Dinneen.

‘While we are nervous taking on the production without the physical presence of Sr Alphonsus we all want to do our best in her memory,’ added Esther.

‘Come to The Manger’ will take place at St Patrick’s Church, Bandon on Sunday December 7th at 4pm. All are welcome.
