MEN from Kerry spend the most on Valentine’s Day flowers, new data from AIB has revealed.

The data, which analyses consumer’s spending habits, reported that over €143 million was spent by AIB customers on Valentine’s Day last year, an increase of 45% on the year before.

The bank chalks the change up to the fact that Valentine’s Day 2024 was on a Wednesday, whereas last year it was on a Friday, allowing more people to celebrate the romantic holiday.

The aftermath of Storm Eowyn didn’t dampen consumers spirits last year. AIB customer’s completed around 3 million transactions on the day.

The data also revealed spending habits in florists around Valentine’s Day. Men spent over half a million euro on flowers on Thursday February 13th, 2025. The average spend for a bunch of flowers was €62.

The top spenders in the country were men from Kerry, who spent an average of €73 on flowers, followed by Limerick and Sligo. Seemingly less overcome by romance, men from Westmeath spent the least amount, €54, followed by Donegal and Cavan.

Traditionally, women dominate supermarket spending in Ireland, representing 59% of transactions in February 2025. However, on the evening of Valentine’s Day 2025, men flipped the script, accounting for just over half of supermarket spend from 5pm onwards. The average transaction by men that evening was €25.

Women overtook men in one category, spending more at the cinema than their male counterparts on Valentine’s day.

Jewellers, confectionary stores and fast food restaurants also saw as increase in consumer spending.

People aged 25-44 accounted for over half of the spend on jewellery on Valentine’s Day, with only 9% by people aged 65 and over.

The data was compiled from 67 million card transactions carried out by AIB customers in store and online during February 2025.

This year, AIB predicts spending patterns to be influenced by the Six Nations rugby match between Ireland and Italy on February 14th in the Aviva Stadium, Dublin.
