LESS than three months since they opened, Kinsale’s brand new public toilets have fallen foul to vandals twice since the start of this year.
The new modular block contains three unisex toilets as well as one disabled toilet, which includes baby changing facilities.
They opened last Christmas following long delays due to conservation issues at location adjacent to the bus stop at the car park on Pier Road.

At this week’s meeting of Bandon Kinsale Municipal District meeting, municipal district officer Brian Dunne said that neither incident of vandalism has resulted in a full closure of the facilities.
‘This is due entirely to the swift response and dedication of the Council’s cleaning team, who ensured the facilities were returned to service as quickly as possible,’ he said.
He expressed his disappointment that this behaviour is persisting.
‘We remain concerned that continued misuse may eventually lead to prolonged closures if the damage escalates.’
Speaking after the meeting, Kinsale-based Cllr Marie O’Sullivan told The Southern Star that they are extremely disappointed to see this vandalism at the new toilets so soon after their opening.
‘This is a shared community facility and it is a shame that some individuals are not showing the basic respect and civic-mindedness needed to care for public property,’ she said.
‘These amenities are provided for everyone to use and enjoy, not to be damaged. We are hopeful that with greater respect from all users, we can keep the toilets open for the benefit of the whole community.’
