Rebels too strong for Monaghan in Mallow

EIMEAR Scally scored a sublime first-half goal as Cork made it two wins from two in their Lidl Ladies NFL Division 1 campaign, beating Monaghan 4-14 to 1-7 in Mallow.

Defending league champions Cork were too strong for the Ulster women and powered to a 3-8 to 1-4 half-time lead with Scally’s goal the highlight of the contest.

Eight minutes into the opening half, Éire Óg’s Scally collected a sideline ball from Áine Terry O’Sullivan that evaded the Monaghan defence, and bearing down on goal, Scally lifted the ball over the advancing Monaghan keeper Linda Martin for a sublime finish.

Doireann O’Sullivan and Brid O’Sullivan also scored first-half goals for Ephie Fitzgerald’s side, Orla Finn finished the half with four points, three from frees, and Scally, Doireann O’Sullivan, Emma Spillane and Aine Terry O’Sullivan weighed in with points.

Cork were always in control in the second half without ever hitting top gear and the returning Ciara O’Sullivan added a fourth goal while Finn finished with eight points in total.

It’s now two wins from two for Cork in this year’s league and next up is an away trip against Dublin next weekend.
