FREDA Roycroft certainly proved to be a smash hit at the International Tennis Federation Masters World Championships in Croatia.

The Bandon Tennis Club member served up a treat with the Ireland over-75s team that finished an impressive eighth overall, beating South Africa and Sweden along the way.

Tennis is a labour of love for Freda, who took up the sport in her forties alongside her husband Billy. The pair have long been involved with Bandon Tennis Club – both on and off the court.

‘They are known for never arguing on the court, which is not something every couple can say!’ their son Steven laughed.

In recent times, Freda and Billy have taken on the role of groundskeepers at Argideen Vale Tennis Club, which boasts six pristine grass courts.

Freda is a natural with a racket in her hand. She has regularly represented Munster in the Interprovincial Masters 65+ teams, and her ace performances there led to an invitation to join the Ireland squad.

‘This is the first time she has been picked to play for Ireland in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Masters Tour World Championships, but it may not be the last!’ Steven added.

‘We often play as a family, with three generations on court at the same time, which is really nice.’

When Freda was asked what’s next? Her answer was simple – keep moving and keep hitting those forehands!
