SKIBBEREEN Rowing Club made it a worthwhile trip to the Ghent International Spring Regatta last weekend as their rowers came home with two gold and four bronze medals.
With a squad of just 12 athletes, the club were treated to good weather conditions over the two days of racing and came away with successes in six events – most notably the men’s junior 14 quad and women’s senior pair.
Saturday saw bronze medals for the junior men’s four of Finn O’Reilly, Ethan O’Connor, Fionn O’Regan and Darragh Kavanagh with Gavin Coakley taking third place in the junior men’s U14 single. Orla Hayes closed off the day for Skibbereen to take a podium finish with a bronze medal in the women’s lightweight single. There were also strong performances from Dominic Casey in a JM12 scull and the women’s coxless four.
Day two brought to a close an extremely successful regatta for Skibbereen, as the junior men brought home two more medals in the form of JM16 4x gold and JM16 2x bronze. The women’s crew had further successes on Sunday with Niamh Casey and Aine McCarthy taking first place in the women’s pair.
