MAEVE O’Neill’s best year yet has delivered another milestone – the Ballinacarriga woman has been named Female Athlete of the Year for Individual Sports at Providence College in Rhode Island.
The Doheny AC athlete, a standout performer in her college’s cross-country and track programme, was honoured at the Providence College Athletics Department’s 65th Annual All-Sports Gala.
It has been an indoor season to savour for Maeve, who also made her senior Irish debut in the 800m at the World Indoor Championships in Poland in March.

In Providence colours, Maeve broke the Irish indoor 800m record with a stunning 2:00.33 at the Saucony Battle for Boston meet, raced to 800m gold in a record time at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, and helped the 4x800m relay team to gold. She was also named BIG EAST Most Outstanding Female Track Performer.
The West Cork athlete, now a three-time All-American, also set three programme records during the indoor track season in the 600m, 800m and 1000m.
