IT was a good weekend for West Cork athletes in America, as both Maeve O’Neill and Darragh McElhinney caught the eye with head-turning performances at the renowned Boston University track.

First up, Doheny AC athlete O’Neill (21), who is on scholarship at Providence College in Rhode Island, put in a stunning last lap to win her 800m heat at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in a new personal best of 2:01.96.

The Ballinacarriga woman moved from last at the bell to take victory in a time that sees her move to sixth on the Irish senior indoor all-time list for the event and is also inside the Athletics Ireland ‘B’ standard for the World Indoor Championships.

The following night, on the same track at Boston University and in the same meet, Bantry AC’s Darragh McElhinney won the men’s 3000m, clocking an indoor personal best of 7:38.96, which is also inside the Athletics Ireland 'B' standard for the World Indoors.  The Glengarriff athlete came up trumps with a 26.87-second last 200 metres to open his indoor season in style.
