IT started with a tongue-in-cheek tweet and ended in a day of GAA celebration never seen before.

After Dingle captured the All-Ireland club senior football title on January 18th, Southern Star sports editor Kieran McCarthy, fresh from watching Kilbrittain’s hurlers celebrate their 2025 West Cork Sports Star Team of the Year award, set the challenge.

‘The big question: will Kilbrittain hurlers point the bus towards Dingle for Day 87 of their own All-Ireland celebrations,’ he quipped on X – a nod to the party in the West Kerry town after their All-Ireland triumph.

Kilbrittain’s own All-Ireland heroes didn’t need to be asked twice.

‘Seed planted now, Kieran,’ replied Mark Hickey, the man who scored the winning point in the All-Ireland club junior hurling final against Easkey.

‘That can be arranged,’ Kilbrittain GAA’s official account added.

Much like they delivered on the pitch, the Black and Amber delivered off it too – not that anyone doubted them. The challenge was accepted.

Just before noon last Saturday, Kilbrittain GAA provided an update: they were Dingle-bound.

‘The result of Kieran McCarthy planting seeds. Dingle bound and the celebrations continue.’

But these were celebrations like no other, as all six All-Ireland-winning club teams – all from Munster – descended on Dingle for a magical day and night that grabbed the headlines.

Joining Kilbrittain were home side Dingle (senior football), Upperchurch-Drombane of Tipperary (intermediate hurling), Kerry clubs Ballymacelligott (junior football) and An Ghaeltacht (intermediate football), and Waterford powerhouse Ballygunner (senior hurling).

An epic day like no other – and Kilbrittain flew the West Cork flag high as their own celebrations drift further into folklore.
