MATTHEW HURLEY REPORTS

JACK Byerley was the hero for Clonakilty Community College as they secured their second win of the TUS Corn Ui Mhuiri Group 4 against fellow West Cork side Skibbereen Community School.

In the 61st minute, Skibb looked to have snatched a draw in a rainy Rosscarbery on Wednesday afternoon as Dan McCarthy kicked an incredible two-pointer to have it 0-10 to 1-7.

Alas, Clon had one more attack and after a free from Sean Whelton dropped short, Byerley spun his marker before firing over the winner.

This wasn't a game for the purists but in lashing rain and a soaking pitch, the result was all that mattered.

With St Brendan's College, Killarney winning the other game in the group over Colaiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Clon now sit top of the pile with four points.

Skibb can still progress but will need to beat Brendan's in the final game as well as hoping Clon get something out of their tie with Ballincollig.

The first point of the local contest came after five minutes as Whelton nailed one for the victors.

Danny O'Donovan was a key thorn for a battling Skibb and equalised three minutes later.

Skibb took the lead through an Odhran Herlihy effort but Whelton pegged them back.

Kilmeen player Jason Murray was a shining light for Clon and struck the lead score and a two-pointer to have his school 0-5 to 0-2 up at the break.

Skibb's Niall O'Callaghan got the first second-half score but Byerly, Conrad Murphy and Mike Collins gave Clon an 0-8 to 0-3 advantage on 40 minutes.

Sub Cathal Daly got one back for Skibb before a long ball into the danger zone led to Luke O'Sullivan burying it to the net.

This game was still in the melting pot at 0-8 to 1-4.

Scores from Collins and Byerley looked to have Haulie O'Sullivan's side in control but Skibb never gave up as chaos in additional time ensued.

Job done for Clon and that was the bottom line given the conditions.
