A SUPERB first-half performance capped off by three excellent goals saw Bantry Bay Rovers defeat Leeside in the SuperValu West Cork Schoolboys’ U12 Cup quarter-finals last Saturday.

The concession of a penalty kick ten minutes into an evenly fought tie handed Bay Rovers an early opportunity to break the deadlock. A foul on Liam Keohane saw Matthew O’Donovan stride forward from his centre-back position and coolly tuck away his spot kick to edge Rovers 1-0 in front.

Leeside had more than held their own up to that point but the Inchigeela team’s inability to create enough clear-cut chances saw Bantry Bay break from defence and score a second midway through the opening half.

Rovers worked the ball to David Shiels on the edge of the Leeside penalty area and the young midfielder unleashed an unstoppable shot beyond Shane Hodman to double his side’s advantage. Matthew Lancaster made sure of Bay Rovers’ victory courtesy of a beautiful strike from the edge of the area just before half time.

The second period was a much more even affair with defences tightening up before Dylan McCarthy’s long-range effort crept over the line shortly before the end. Leeside would have the final say with Brian O’Riordan heading home from a corner right on full time but there could be no denying Bantry Bay Rovers’ victory following an entertaining cup tie.
