Ballydehob shock champions Riverside

Ger McCarthy reviews last weekend's West Cork Soccer League games plus fixtures for the coming weekend.

BALLYDEHOB inflicted a surprise defeat on reigning West Cork League PremierHiSpecCars.com Premier Division champions Riverside Athletic during a wild weekend of action.

Athletic came out the wrong side of a 5-3 loss in Rathravane with Jason Nyhan (2), Paidi O’Shea, Sacha Walden and Mike Helen on target for a resurgent Ballyedhob. Tiernan O’Driscoll, Cormac Lordan and Peter Daly replied for Riverside.

Drinagh Rangers and Dunmanway Town’s top of the table clash ended scoreless in Canon Crowley Park, keeping both sides in joint-first place on seven points apiece after three rounds of fixtures.

In the same division, Togher Celtic earned their first league win of the new campaign thanks to a 2-0 triumph at home to Clonakilty AFC with Dan McSweeney and Johnny Kelly finding the net. A local derby saw Bunratty United overcome Bantry Bay Rovers 4-0 thanks to Colm Cleary (2), Shane O’Brien, and Shane O’Sullivan strikes in Town Park, Schull.

Spartak Mossgrove, Lyre Rovers and Mizen AFC lead the promotion race at the summit of the OBrienWaterServices.com Division 1 standings following last Sundayís games. Mossgrove moved a point clear at the top following a superb 3-0 win at home to Skibbereen. Daniel Twomey netted a brace and an additional Aidan O’Sullivan goal earned Spartak all three points.

On the same afternoon, second placed Lyre Rovers matched their Division1 rivals by registering an important 3-0 win at home to Mizen. Gearoid Barry, Shane OíDonovan and Sean OíDonovan all found the net to keep Rovers in the title and promotion hunt.

Baltimore and Kilmichael Rovers had to settle for a point apiece following a 1-1 draw with Sean O’Donovan netting for the crabs and Finbarr Buckley scoring for Rovers. A walkover from Crookstown saw Sullane gain their first three points of the campaign without having to kick a ball.

Clonakilty Town maintained their perfect record atop West Cork League Division 2 with a third consecutive victory last Sunday. Cian Crowley and Scott Sheehan each found the net twice to secure a 4-1 win away to Courtmacsherry with Conor O’Regan scoring for the hosts.

Two goals from Jack O’Callaghan helped Castletown Celtic overcome Dunmanway Town B 2-0 in Castletownkenneigh while Aultagh Celticís promotion hopes received a timely boost courtesy of a walkover from Caheragh Celtic. Drinagh Rangers B and Durrus’ league encounter ended all square in Canon Crowley Park. Ger O’Donovan got on the scoresheet for the hosts and Kieran OíDonovan netted for Durrus in a 1-1 draw.
