NEWCESTOWN’S SE Systems Premier Intermediate Camogie Championship campaign came to an end last weekend as they fell to a 1-9 to 0-10 defeat against Ballincollig in Coachford.

The West Cork club were relegated from the senior grade last year and were hoping to win the second tier and bounce straight back up.

That wasn’t to be the case though, despite a valiant effort from the Carbery side.

Ballygarvan will face Ballincollig in the decider after a south-east derby victory over Ballinhassig, 1-13 to 2-9 in Shamrocks.

That final will take place on Saturday, October 11th in Castle Road.

The senior decider between St Finbarr’s and St Catherine’s will take place in the same venue the next day (Sunday, 12th).

Meanwhile, Ballinascarthy continue their intermediate championship campaign when they face Newtownshandrum this Sunday. A crucial game in deciding who will join Sliabh Rua in the two of the round-robin as if Newtown win, they seal second spot. A Bal win would put them in the driving seat for a top-two place. Bal’s West Cork derby against Kilbrittain/Timoleague was postponed last weekend.

In the Bandon Co-op Carbery Junior B Football Championship quarter-finals, the second string sides still reigned supreme with Dohenys and Newcestown joining Clonakilty and Bandon in the semi-finals.

Newcestown saw off Clann na nGael 2-13 to 1-10 in Aughaville last Friday night to book a place in the semis against Clonakilty. Amazingly, this quarter-final had three subs in the first 20 minutes with Newcestown getting bad luck with injuries. Scorchers led 1-5 to 0-4 at half-time but it was Newcestown who regained the initiative in the second period.

Two goals in the first ten second-half minutes from Eddie Kenneally gave Newcestown the platform to plough on. Kenneally also scored a two-pointer late on to put a seal on a fantastic display. Dohenys progressed to the last four with a 4-14 to 3-15 win over O’Donovan Rossa in a game full of goals. Bandon is up next for the Dunmanway club in the last four.
