There were several minor road accidents throughout West Cork today as icy roads, combined with rain, had a disastrous effect on conditions.
From early yesterday evening, the plummeting temperatures caused frost throughout the county and early morning rain has exacerbated the problem.
The Southern Star has recieved reports of accidents in several areas, including near Innishannon, Macroom, Newcestown, Bandon, Ballylickey, Timoleague, Drimoleague and Caheragh.
Our photo, by John Delea, shows a car overturned this morning near Macroom.
The road is the R618 at the junction with the N22 as you enter Macroom, on the Cork side.
There were also several accidents at a bridge near Newcestown which eventually collapsed due to the pressure of a number of vehicles having skidded into it.
Although the roads are thawing, black ice is a concern, and the recent rain showers have made an already dangerous situation on many roads, even more treacherous.
