Gardai have confirmed that two men have died following a house fire in Macroom today. They have been named locally as Noel O'Mahony and Kenneth Relihan. Kenneth's mother is one of the two people hospitalised.

Emergency  services attended the scene of the house fire in St Coleman's Park, Macroom, at 4am this morning.

Kenneth's mother, who jumped from an upstairs window, was removed to Cork University Hospital (CUH), although her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening at this time.

A man believed to be a neighbour, who had tried to get into the burning house, was also removed to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

The fire was brought under control and the bodies of the two men, Noel (who was in his 60s) and Kenneth ('Kenny'), who was in his 20s, were discovered in the house. They were pronounced dead at the scene and their bodies have been removed to CUH where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

The scene is now sealed off and a technical examination of the area will take place later today. Early indications are that the fire started accidently.

Gardaí are appealing to witnesses to contact them at Macroom Garda Station on 026 20590.
