IT was a poignant moment for the family and friends of the late Michelle (Shelly) Hayes from Burgatia in Rosscarbery as they marked her 39th birthday by presenting a cheque of almost €60,000 to Marymount Hospice at the Celtic Ross Hotel last Friday night.

On the same day, her ashes were scattered at Shelly’s believed Warren strand.

The money raised was as a result of a series of fundraising events under the banner ‘Shelly’s Drive for Marymount’, after she had asked her dad Steve and husband Derry to raise funds for Marymount Hospice, before she lost her battle with cancer earlier this year.

An incredible €58,234.94 was raised, which was handed over to nurses Marie O’Connor and Karen Murphy of Marymount Hospice on Friday night.

Shelly’s dad publicly thanked everyone and earlier that evening, on what would have been Shelly’s 39th birthday, her ashes were scattered at the Warren,  where she was remembered by close family and friends.
