MSD Ireland has opened its new immuno-oncology lab in Brinny, outside Innishannon, which will test medicines for patients, including those with cancer, around the world.

The lab will employ 16 people full-time and will double the testing capacity of key products at the site, significantly streamlining production and increasing the speed at which products can reach patients.

The state-of-the-art facility, which took nine months to develop, will play a central role in production and supply for MSD in the world market ,including products for oncology, hepatitis C and rheumatoid arthritis.

Bandon native Barry Mulcahy is the site lead at MSD Brinny.

‘As a leading healthcare company, our growth and development has been built on continually embracing new ways of working, as well as the latest cutting-edge technologies,’ said Barry.

‘Our highly-skilled workforce here in Brinny is now leading the way in the development of new medicines. Supplies of oncology products will be tested here in Cork before being supplied to patients globally,’ he explained.

‘Our new lab will provide us with twice the testing capacity, thus dramatically increasing the speed at which the treatment can reach those who need it.’

MSD Brinny has a long tradition of manufacturing,  as well as a strong legacy in the biopharmaceutical sector. It’s one of the region’s largest employers, with more than 500 staff and has been a vibrant part of the local Innishannon community for nearly 35 years.
