The Michael Collins House Museum in Clonakilty is closed until further notice after a section of the ceiling in one of the upstairs rooms collapsed on Wednesday afternoon.

A Council spokesperson told The Southern Star that no damage was caused to the displays at the popular museum but as a precautionary measure the museum will remain closed pending the outcome of a technical assessment which is currently underway.

Michael Collins House Museum posted online that they will continue to provide updates as necessary and said they appreciate the public's patience and understanding during this time.

Located at Emmet Square, the three storey museum opened in 2016 and is one of West Cork's most popular attractions in West Cork which takes in three historical West Cork figures in history – Tadgh an Asna and his part in the 1798 rebellion, O'Donovan Rossa covering the late nineteenth century and Michael Collins covering the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War.
