A FREE education programme is available for people with type 2 diabetes living in West Cork.

The four-week HSE Discover Diabetes programme is run by registered dietitians and offers clear, practical guidance on food, physical activity, blood glucose levels and medications, cutting through the confusing and often conflicting information found online.

More than 270,000 people in Ireland are living with type 2 diabetes, and many say they feel unsure where to turn for reliable advice.

Discover Diabetes provides trustworthy support in a friendly, small group setting.

Tim from West Cork found much needed confidence and support after attending the programme.

‘I have an active lifestyle now. I have normal food, not special meals. And the support keeps me motivated.’

Discover Diabetes courses run throughout the year with sessions starting regularly. People can take part shortly after diagnosis or many years later.

Each programme runs for four weeks and includes optional followup support to help participants continue their progress.

HSE Diabetes Specialist Senior Dietitian Blaithin O’Neill says that the course ‘gives people the tools and confidence they need to manage their health in a realistic and sustainable way.’

In West Cork, sessions are held in Skibbereen, Clonakilty and Bantry.

People can be referred by their GP, practice nurse or public health nurse, or they may selfregister online at hse.ie/conditions/type-2-diabetes/courses-and-support
