A WEST Cork artist’s life size horse sculpture has earned €13,500 for charity.
Sara Hodson, based in Reenascreena, was involved in a project called Under stARTers orders, a chaity fundraising public art auction.
It saw various artists invited to create horse sculptures which last Friday were auctioned in aid of Irish Injured Jockeys and Sensational Kids which has a base in Clonakilty.
Sara created a resin horse sculpture called ‘Misneach’ which went under the hammer alongside ‘Sheba’ by U2’s The Edge in collaboration with the artist Duda and four other horses.
The concept for the entire project was inspired by the new Curragh Racecourse redevelopment. Organisers wanted to mark this significant transformation at the heart of the thoroughbred county in a creative way. As well as raising money for good causes, it wanted to bring art to the attention of the public by cleverly displaying the project at key locations. ‘Misneach’ was on show in the Irish National Stud. Project Manager, Dave Southern said: ‘These uniquely painted horses are part of a truly amazing art collection. Under stARTers orders offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a unique piece of art that is really quite special and better still, all funds raised from the proceeds of the sales were split between two very worthy charities.’
Sara added that it was a very worthwhile project to be involved in as it generated a great deal of interest in both the artists and the charity.
