BARTH O’Leary of Kilbree, Clonakilty celebrated his 100th birthday recently, with a letter of congratulations from President Higgins and a cheque.

His birthday celebrations took place on January 29th, in Mount Carmel Hospital in Clonakilty, where he is a resident. He is the only surviving member of a family of eight.

Barth lived in London for 30 years and in New York City for a further 40 years.

He returned to Kilbree in 2005 to be amongst the neighbours he loved.

He was a member of the successful Kilbree Tug-o-War team, is a lover of music and poetry and can speak French.

He picked blackberries until he was 95, making his own jam and wine, and both were very popular with friends and neighbours.

The secret to longevity, according to Barth, is ‘plenty eggs and fish’.
