DR Jason van der Velde and Skibbereen’s ‘Down & Dirty Crew’ were the recipients of the November and December West Cork Hero awards at a function in the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery last Friday afternoon.

Dr Jason was honoured for his lifesaving work with West Cork Rapid Response while Garry Minihane, Don Davis, Paudie O’Donovan, Cian O’Mahony and Ciaran Dillane, along with an extended group of volunteers and helpers, were recognised for their remarkable fundraising work (almost €100,000 for various local charities) over the past five years.

They, along with 10 other monthly award winners, now go forward for possible selection as the overall West Cork Hero (or Heroes) for 2016 at a gala dinner on March 3rd next.

This is the first year of the West Cork Hero awards, which are a joint initiative between the Celtic Ross Hotel and The Southern Star
