CORK County Council is urging motorists to drive with care over the coming days as heavy rain and strong winds are forecast.

A Met Éireann Status Yellow rainfall warning will be in place from 6.00am to 8.00pm today (Thursday, October 2nd) with widespread, heavy rain leading to localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions.

The worst of the rain is expected in West Cork.

Cork County Council is asking road users to exercise caution as driving conditions may be hazardous, with surface water flooding possible.

Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flowing or standing water and to exercise caution during heavy rain.

Motorists are also asked to be conscious of cyclists and pedestrians.

The rain warning will be followed by a Status Yellow wind warning on Friday which comes into force from midday.

Strong to near gale force winds and gusty south-westerly winds are forecast until midnight on Friday.

The potential impacts include difficult travelling conditions, debris, loose objects displaced and some fallen trees possible.

Strong winds can make driving conditions hazardous, especially for the more vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and high sided vehicles.

Road users should pay particular attention to the risk posed by fallen trees and flying debris.

Forecasted conditions may give rise to localised power outages.

Issues such as flooding and road damage can be reported to Cork County Council’s emergency number 021 4800048 which will remain open until 9.00am on Friday morning.

On Friday, issues can be reported to your local Council Office during working hours (9am to 5pm), details of which can be found by visiting www.corkcoco.ie.

Call 999 or 112 and request the Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Gardaí or Irish Coastguard as appropriate.
