STUDENTS from Shanghai were welcomed to Cork after winning a competition designed to showcase the opportunities available for further education here.
County mayor Christopher O’Sullivan welcomed the winners of the Shamrock Cup English Language Competition to County Hall. Students between the ages of 13 and 15 compete in the Shamrock Cup to win a weeklong visit to Cork and Dublin.
The winners demonstrated proficiency in the English language and knowledge of Irish culture and heritage.
The competition is a Cork County Council-funded initiative, delivered in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Irish consulate in Shanghai. The competition raises awareness about Cork and the wonderful opportunities available to pursue further education here.
Cllr O’Sullivan praised the initiative: ‘The Shamrock Cup provides a wonderful opportunity, not only for the students, but for us in Co Cork to share our beautiful county with the world,’ he said.
‘Having spoken with the winning students, I’m confident that we have left a lasting good impression on them.
‘ I hope that they decide to return in the future – to visit, study, work or invest in Cork.’
