THE organisers of the 36th South of Ireland Band Championships and the Old Time Fair Day are finalising preparations for the first Saturday in July.

The event will see families and friends enjoying a free day of entertainment on the streets and throughout a number of indoor venues for the competition.

Coinciding with American Independence Day, the July 4th musical programme will also include some well-known American pieces. Dr Evelyn Grant will adjudicate the junior category and Mr Philip Harper from the UK will take charge of the intermediate and senior categories.

It will be a long day for Mr Harper with 21 bands on his schedule.

One band leader, when informed of the large number of entries, commented that the event organisers have become victims of their own success – not a bad recommendation for the town.

The Old Time Fair is well established with Bobby Blackwell, Noel Lynch and Kim McNamara co-ordinating some wonderful displays. To enhance the atmosphere, they are encouraging people to dress in vintage costume if possible.

So it’s full steam ahead, with a fervent wish that the sun will shine once again so that locals and visitors may enjoy another special day in Clonakilty. A full programme for the event will appear in next week’s edition.
