It's hard to believe that another summer has come and gone and the back-to-school ads and Christmas party posters have taken over billboards where images of sun-kissed beaches and tanned, toned bikini models recently resided.

IT’S hard to believe that another summer has come and gone and the back-to-school ads and Christmas party posters have taken over billboards where images of sun-kissed beaches and tanned, toned bikini models recently resided.

With the arrival of a new season comes the need for a new wardrobe (silver linings anyone?) and the cooler autumn temperatures certainly demand the addition of a few key transitional pieces into your existing wardrobe.

One of the main items I have been rocking for the last month – thanks to our unreliable weather forecast – is the currently very-on-trend bomber jacket. This lightweight jacket is the perfect pick for those overcast but humid days that are not quite balmy enough to bare your arms.

According to the style experts at i-Clothing, one of the most effective ways to work this key autumn piece is to ‘pair it with your go-to black jeans, block heel boots and a statement clutch for that event you’ve been dying to go to. Don’t be afraid to throw it over a sexy bodycon t-shirt dress with trainers for an unpredicted sportswear look. Whichever way you style it, this silhouette is going nowhere this season and is set to stay put right though till spring.’ Good to know!

Over-the-knee boots are also back with a bang for the autumn season and much like last year, will serve you well throughout the winter months too. These are a super stylish buy, that are a new-season fave of the likes of stylist-to-the-stars Rachel Zoe, and can look extremely chic when paired with the correct look.

For an effortlessly feminine autumn ensemble, invest in a slouchy suede or edgy leather pair and wear over skinny jeans, relaxed slogan t-shirt and a tailored blazer or pair with a jumper dress for a gorgeous smart-casual look.

Another item that gained huge popularity last season and is set to be equally as on trend for the months ahead is the cape. Simple and sophisticated, this piece is lightweight enough to wear on those evenings that are still too balmy to justify the reintroduction of your favourite winter cover-up.

The cape should be one of your top wardrobe picks for autumn, as it covers a multitude of (style) sins and combines elegance with laidback chic. Eliminate excess bulk from an oversized cape and create a feminine silhouette by cinching the cape around the waist using a belt.

Obi belts, like this one from ASOS (pictured), are a particularly good match with the cape and come in a variety of styles and colours.
