A 16-YEAR-OLD student at Maria Immaculata Community College in Dunmanway has raised more than €2,700 for charity with a Transition Year ball.

As many as 350 students from all over West Cork attended the function, which was held at The Parkway Hotel recently.

The event, organised by Abbie Buckley from Togher, Dunmanway, as well as a number of her classmates, was a tremendous success.

Abbie said: ‘Everyone was delighted to have a good night out, but they were also keen to contribute to the Donal Walsh #livelife foundation, an organisation that was set up to support teenagers with suicidal thoughts.’

It was the first time that Abbie ever organised an event of this size or scale and she said she was delighted with the goodwill and support she received throughout.

‘Everyone helped,’ she said. ‘All of the Transition year students got involved; the staff at the Parkway Hotel were also very supportive; and my parents, John and Ann Buckley, were brilliant too.’

It was, in fact, so successful that Abbie and her friends are considering hosting another ball during the summer in aid of a different charity.
