New rural crime initiative outlined at Bantry meeting

RURAL crime has become a big problem in many parts of Ireland in recent times. 

Last year, in response to this growing challenge to the farming community, the IFA launched a new initiative to help prevent farm theft, in partnership with An Garda Síochána. To spearhead this new initiative, the IFA appointed a Rural Crime Prevention Officer, Colin Connolly. 

The former Garda, with experience in crime investigation and crime prevention techniques, recently addressed a Community Alert meeting at Westlodge Hotel in Bantry. He outlined the different aspects of the policy, known as ‘Theft Stop’, which could become a considerable deterrent to criminals who target rural Ireland. 

A selection of various-sized self-adhesive stencils can be purchased. These can be attached to any machine and then sprayed using the paint provided. 

In addition, a metal stamping kit is available with which a farmer can mark a concealed part of a machine or vehicle with a special security ID which is unique to that individual. 

The initiative is open to everyone, but the required components can be purchased by IFA members at a considerably reduced cost. Further details are available at www.theftstop.ie.
