PATRICK Horgan has been described as an ‘icon’ and an ‘inspiration’ following his decision to call time on his incredible Cork hurling career.

The Glen Rovers man (37) announced on his social media this week that he is stepping back from the inter-county scene after a remarkable 18 years at the highest level.

Horgan called it ‘the privilege of my life to represent the people of Cork during that time.’

He bows out as the top hurling championship scorer of all time, with an incredible 32-683. The talismanic forward also won four All-Stars, four Munster senior titles, as well as a league crown this year.

‘Patrick Horgan became an icon for a new generation of Cork supporters in the 2000s, who flocked in their thousands to support the Cork hurlers. His commitment, dedication and pursuit of excellence saw him become an inspiration to so many,’ Cork GAA CEO Kevin O’Donovan said.

‘Patrick Horgan can justly lay claim to be one of the greats of Cork hurling,’ added Cork GAA Chairman Pat Horgan.

The former Cork minor and U21 player competed in four All Ireland senior finals, the most recent being the loss to Tipperary, but his legacy transcends his collection of trophies.

‘Yet for all this array of medals and awards, he will perhaps be remembered best as the embodiment of the aspirations of a new generation of Cork supporters who, unlike previous generations, had not been reared on All Ireland victories, but who nonetheless craved for success, and followed the Cork team in their thousands. For this generation, and for all Cork supporters, the popular name ‘Hoggie’ became synonymous with their hopes and dreams of glory,’ Cork GAA said.

Star GAA reporter Tom Lyons added: ‘He wasn’t a big man but a great build for a hurler, and he was deceptively fast on the pitch. But it was the magic touch that enthralled us all. The flick, the pick, the superb wrist work, like Ringy in his prime.’
